Hermann Weyl

1885–1955

A mathematician and theoretical physicist whose work revealed deep relations among symmetry, geometry, analysis, and physical law.

Weyl moved with unusual freedom across mathematical disciplines. His work encompassed differential geometry, topology, Lie groups, representation theory, quantum mechanics, harmonic analysis, and number theory, while repeatedly returning to the unity of mathematical structure and the natural world.

“My work always tried to unite the truth with the beautiful.”
